I have worked in the Painting industry for over 20 years, starting out at aged 16. I started my apprenticeship with a 1-man band who were fantastic, taught me a lot and gave me 1 on 1 training for many years. I moved to a bigger firm with over 25 men, it didn’t take long to be made foreman, running huge jobs at Leeds General Infirmary as well as 2 large council contracts, Ilkley and Burley in Wharfedale all at a young age of 20. This particular firm ended up going bust, when a new owner took over so on I moved to one of the biggest decorating firms in the UK, I worked hard and earned my stripes but in the end decided if I wanted to work at the standard I was trained I needed to go it alone, in 2008 I went self employed as ASDecor8 painting and decorating, hard work and determination I ended up securing a contract with Chatsworth settlement trustees, painting the external properties around the country, Bolton Abbey estates and many estates in Derbyshire, including Chatsworth house itself. After years of working hard and gaining a great customer base I asked my brother josh if he wanted a job, I valued the family aspect of the business. We worked hard and I trained josh up in every way I was taught, soon we were running jobs together. We decided to look into spraying and a new line of work and agreed that we would become business partners. SG COATINGS LTD was created, we now run the business as a 3-man team, me, Josh and our nephew Liam. We cover all aspects of painting and decorating and still do all the old contracts with Chatsworth. We now have a big unit with an office and a prep room, spray room and drying room, and we now are pushing the spraying side even more than ever with a goal to expand.
At aged 20 I started working with Andy at ASDecor8, having not had much work experience I was pretty green to painting, I worked hard and learned everything I could from Andy, after a couple of years I was coming into my own and starting to be able to start and finish jobs on my own, often running jobs in Bolton abbey and Chatsworth, 3 years into the job I had done my time as a employee and we decided to set up SG COATINGS LTD, 2 years on we are doing great and have some big ideas to put in play. Business is booming and our name is growing.
